Room rates in the summer used to be very good but it seems lately room prices in general have gotten higher. I've stayed at Flamingo, Bally's and they were reasonable. If you want a big pool, don't choose Bally's. Don't count out the MGM, I've seen some good prices in the summer. Keep an eye on the hotel web sites. As always, Sunday to Thursday room prices are usually the best as weekends are always higher. Don't forget that if you book a room you can always cancel and re-book for a better price somewhere else or even at the same property. Some places want three days notice to cancel, some as little as one. Make sure to ask. Have fun!!

Avoid the Stratosphere. Its the cheapest place on the Strip, but its too far from the action, and borders the scummy part of town between the Strip and downtown. Circus Circus or Imperial Palace are decent, and not too expensive (plus Imperial Palace is centrally located).

There is no doubt that the best value for a hotel near the strip right now is called the Southpoint.

This casino is only about a year old. It is clean and reasonably priced. It is located on Las Vegas Blvd.
Only con is that it is about five miles from "the strip". It is a straight shot down Las Vegas Blvd though, so taking a bus, cab, or shuttle would not be a problem.

Expedia:

Overall satisfaction 96% of travelers (172 of 179) recommend this hotel 4.6
Hotel service 4.4
Hotel condition 4.7
Room cleanliness 4.7
Room comfort 4.7
Scores are based on a 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) rating system.

Prices for a random week in June:
Room type Deluxe room
Thu $83
Fri $134
Sat $123
Sun $72
Mon $72
Tue $72
Wed $83
Avg rate $91.29 (per night)
Deluxe room

Stay away from the Stratosphere. That area (although located on the strip) is a very high crime area. The hotel and Strat are very undesireable attractions for locals.

Vegas hotels are broken down into two unique sections. 1, The Strip. 2, Downtown. The best hotels in downtown LV would be the Golden Nugget, Fitzgeralds or The Four Queens.

The strip, on the other hand is going to be much higher usually if not for the room rate, the gaming is much higher on the strip. Places like NY NY or Excaliber may offer some great deals, but I know from experience that their rooms are very small. A travel agent would be a better place to price shop and if they are any good at what they do, they will know not to send you to certain places. If you drink and gamble....do it downtown. Its cheaper and the casino employees are much friendlier. The Strip is a great place to window shop and take in the free shows such as Treasure Island and the Aquarium at Mirage. I wish I could tell you more, but its getting kindy wordy allready. Email me if you have some questions. The Sahara is a nice hotel....one of the other answers mentioned the Sahara. Their rooms are really quite large.

The Orleans is very nice and just off the strip. But if its a first visit and you want a feel of "real vegas" how about the Four Queens down town? Or even Golden Nugget if you get a good deal, its not that much different in price to Strat.

If you want on the strip I would suggest- wait for it- circus circus. Yes the casino is in need of a refit, but the rooms are lovely for what you pay, and it has still got one of the best steakhoused in vegas in it....

Try NYNY. Conviently located on the Strip. Good vibe, lots to do and offers very easy access to other attractions and casinos. Moderately priced. Much cheaper than Wynn or MGM. A lot safer than the Strat. NYNY is owned by the same company that owns MGM. Always a good time!! Good luck!!

On the Strip look at Tropicana Hotel or Sahara Hotel. If you don't mind driving a wee bit and not stay directly on The Strip but in a nice local favorite - try Orleans or Gold Coast, both about one mile or so west of The Strip and an easy drive. They are Boyd Properties and I have stayed at both when we had are carpets cleaned.
