Beer For Home

How can I make good tasting inexpensive Home Brewed Beer?
It seems the price for DME/LME is going way up and Hops are through the roof, yeast is expensive – the only cheap thing is water and the grains. How can I make a good tasting beer that doesn’t cost $50 a batch? I can only do partial grain (steep in a bag) type extract brewing now. Are there any good inexpensive recipes that you make or know of?
I’m not asking you how much you spend.
I’m asking how to make a good tasting cheap recipe.
Very simple Amarillo Ale
Based on a 5 gallon batch and 60 minute boil.
6lb light DME
1.5lb Crystal Malt 60L
1oz Amarillo @ 60 min
1oz Amarillo @ 15 min
Liquid California ale yeast
Total cost is about $35. Makes about 2 cases, so about $17.50 case. If you buy grains, DME, etc. in bulk you can get even lower prices. Join a local Homebrew club and order in bulk if you won’t use it all yourself.

Road & The Radio $3.99 After the sort of year that Kenny Chesney has experienced–from a whirlwind courtship through a short-lived marriage–a guy needs some time to chill. Thus it’s no surprise that The Road and the Radio finds the party-hearty country hunk in an uncommonly introspective mood. The soul-searching title track establishes the album’s intimacy and theme of taking stock, sustained through the bittersweet b… |

Three Men and a Baby [VHS] $1.22 Not nearly as good as the original French comedy, Three Men and a Cradle, upon which this is based, Three Men and a Baby nevertheless is decent brain candy directed with some crackle by Leonard Nimoy. Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson star as three swinging bachelor roommates who find a baby girl on their doorstep–the daughter of Danson’s character (who doesn’t know about her) by a wo… |

Safe Passage [VHS] $4.04 This family drama, based on a novel by Ellyn Bache, is overly familiar in its concentration of cracked secrets and family revelations all pouring down during a brief crisis. But it has a fine cast led by Susan Sarandon, and they make the whole enterprise a watchable affair. Sarandon plays a middle-aged mother of a brood of mostly grown sons. Suffering from empty-nest syndrome, she tends towar… |

The Point [VHS] $6.75 Harry Nilsson wrote the entirely hummable songs (including the hit, “Me and My Arrow”) for this charming, 1971 animation feature about a boy with a round head who is banished from the land of pointy-headed people. An allegory about nonconformism presented in a delightful way, this is a treat for everybody. Ringo Starr, the late Nilsson’s old pal, narrates. –Tom Keogh… |
